Taking Vacations In Birmingham And Where To Stay

Sadly, in recent times, it has been forced upon us to try to save money wherever we can and often first to go are the little luxuries in life. Where many folk place their annual vacation in with their list of luxuries others regard their break as a necessity and cancelling it is not a viable option. However it is possible to save a great deal of cash simply by planning carefully ahead making small savings wherever you can. One of the best ways to cut the costs of your annual vacation is to plan it yourself, booking your own hotel and planning which places to visit (rather than paying a ridiculous amount of cash for an all inclusive package vacation). You can save yourself a small fortune by doing this as many places to visit are often free to enter. While it is possible to book cheap hotels it is often surprising how little it costs to stay in a luxury hotel. In the following article I wish to introduce you to the English city of Birmingham as a vacation destination. Not only are their bargains to be had but the British pound is still rather weak against other currencies meaning that those who live there find foreign vacations expensive and those visiting from abroad find it cheaper now than in previous years. All in all Birmingham is a great place to take a city break.

Birmingham also has an incredible number of hectares of parks, open spaces and woodland, Sutton Park being the largest with 2,400 acres it is also the largest urban nature reserve in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Fun Toddler Activities For Less Than The Cost Of A Latte

Having fun with your toddler does not mean you have to break the bank. Each of the following five activities all cost less than the price of a drink or snack – and the memories will last a lot longer! Because they use simple materials, they are also more imaginative than expensive toys and games.

BOX TOWER – Take any boxes you can find around the home and play Jenga with them. Toddlers love the tension and excitement of wondering which box will topple the tower. After this, you can put the boxes back, matching the inner bag of cereal to its box for example.

WATER ACTIVITIES – toddlers love any game involving water. Even better is washing up. Fill a bowl of warm water – outside if the weather is good enough – and let your toddler get soaked! The important thing is to only wash a few plastic items like a play tea set. Don’t fret if they are still dirty at the end.

WHERE’S THE TIMER? – hide an ordinary kitchen timer that ticks loudly enough to be heard. Now let your mini detective search for it. Important: Don’t to make the hiding place too challenging – accompany the child if you think he might get cross doing this activity. For younger toddlers, conceal the timer in the same room, and make it somewhere highly visible.

TODDLER I-SPY – Take from 3 – 8 magazine pictures (depending on the child’s age) of things in your area – a dog, a tree, a car, etc. Now take a walk together, looking for each item. Having the focus of the photos helps keep up the interest and stops that predictable cry of ‘Want to go home’ or pleas of ‘Carry!’

MAGNIFYING GLASS HUNT – take a magnifying glass and go outside. Now have a look at at all the small things that are easy to miss: bugs, worms etc. Older toddlers can practise saying the words, and those under two will still gain from you saying what each creature or plant is.

The Beautiful Silver Rings Miao Women Wear In Their Moon Dance Festival

Residing in southwest China, the Miao minority group are well known for their beautiful silver rings. During the Moon Dance Festival, Miao women will wear silver rings and other silver jewels to proudly display their beauty and elegance. For young people, the Moon Dance Festival is also a good time to look for their life partners. Men play their unique Lusheng musical instrument, with women singing and dancing around. The festival is held three times a year. The story below tells the origin of this festival.

A long, long time ago, there were two brothers who resided on the mountain. To make a living, the elder brother went to chop wood everyday, and the younger brother went fishing. Then they sold their products in the market. Their life was simple but joyful.

The elder brother enjoyed music. Every time he went to hew wood, he would always look for some reed and bamboo, then make them into a pipe and play it. It sounded very beautiful. So gradually he collected many pipes. One day, he sat on a stone, and blew the pipes one by one. Each pipe made sound with various pitches. He said to himself, “If I play all these pipes together, then what music it would make?”

One day when the elder brother chopped a kiri, he found the inside of kiri was hollow. He bored some holes in one side of this kiri wood, and put the pipes into the holes. Then he blew into the kiri. Instantaneously the kiri made several different sounds at the same time. After studying this for a few days, he at last created a musical instrument which could make pleasant melodies with different tones. This instrument was later called Lusheng. The sweet music of Lusheng attracted many people. Even the birds and animals in the mountain liked this fabulous music.

In a cave nearby, there was a female tiger who was intoxicated by the music too. But the tiger dreamed to have the elder brother only play music for herself. So one day, the tiger became a lady with several big silver rings around her fingers. She came stealthily to the brothers’ home, and ate some food in the kitchen.

When the two brothers came home and saw the tiger, they were very angry, ” Why are you here and eat our fish?” The tiger replied, ” Your fish was really delicious! And now I want you to go with me!” The tiger held the elder brother, and escaped. The younger brother tried to get his brother back, but failed. The elder brother was taken away. When they left, the younger brother saw a tail under the lady’s skirt. So he realized the lady was actually a tiger.

The younger brother ran to call in the villagers. They took bows and arrows to seek for the elder brother everywhere in the mountains. However a few weeks passed, and they still couldn’t find the brother. Until one day, they climbed to the top of the mountain, and heard a bird twittering, ” They are here, they are here!” They followed the sound, and came to a cave where the elder brother was captured. The younger brother and villagers killed the tiger, and saved the elder brother.

The elder brother played the Lusheng music to express his excited feelings, with the villagers sang and danced around him.

Since then, Lusheng musical instrument started to be popular in the Miao area. In lunar January, June, and August, people get together with men playing Lusheng music, and women dancing around with elaborate silver rings on their fingers. The activity is often held in the evening when there is a bright moon in the sky. So the festival is called ” the Moon Dance Festival”. It also has a nickname ” Looking For Brother Festival”. The women’s silver rings shine especially beautifully in the moonlight.
