3 Keys To Getting An Athletic Scholarship
The other day, I was part of an amazing college recruiting panel at Brentwood high school in CA. I was fortunate enough to share the stage with a former Princeton baseball player, the head women’s basketball coach at Occidental college, and the compliance director at UCLA. The athletic director at Brentwood asked me to speak about how to put together an effective College Recruiting Game Plan, so I shared 3 critical components to college recruiting success.
There are 3 keys to your College Recruiting Game Plan:
TIMELINE – When to promote?
Parents always ask me, “When should I start promoting my student-athlete to college coaches?” I always tell them the best time to start is once you have quality varsity footage. This way a college coach can see you play against top talent and better judge your talent and skills.
TOOLS NEEDED
The second thing you need for a successful recruiting game plan are the right tools. You will need an athletic resume, an official transcript, and a quality highlight video. If you can think of this process as being similar to getting a job, it will help you to effectively understand the use of each tool. Your transcript is very important because more and more schools are putting more emphasis on the academic aspect of recruiting. Your highlight video is also an imperative tool. A coach cannot effectively recruit you if they are unable to watch you play.
TAKING CHARGE – PROMOTE YOURSELF
This is probably the most important part of your college recruiting game plan. Once you have all of your tools in place, it is imperative that you beging promoting yourself to college coaches. Even if you are the BEST player in your state, and college coaches do not know you exist there is no way for them to effectively recruit you. If is critically important that you do an outstanding job of promoting yourself to college coaches, and then follow up with them to see how you can be an asset to their program.
